The BEST Toys for German Shepherds (As Reviewed By Me, Alfie 🐾)

Woof woof woof. Hi. It's me. Alfie.

My pops said I could write a blog post and I said YES OBVIOUSLY because I have VERY important opinions about toys and someone needed to say something.

I am a German Shepherd Dog. I am large. I am powerful. I have a jaw that could probably crush a small car (I have not tested this. Yet.). So when it comes to toys, I know what's up β€” and I am here to tell you that NOT ALL TOYS ARE CREATED EQUAL.

Let me break it down for you, human-style.

🦷 The Problem With Most Dog Toys

Okay so here's the thing. My humans brought home one of those squeaky plush toys once. A little duck. It was cute. I respected it for approximately 4 seconds before I destroyed it completely. There were feathers everywhere. My humans were not thrilled.

The point is: German Shepherds are not small dogs. We are not Chihuahuas (no offense, Chihuahuas). We have big mouths, big energy, and big opinions. We need toys that can KEEP UP.

Here's what I personally look for in a toy:

  • It does not immediately explode when I look at it
  • It engages my giant brain (GSDs are smart β€” like, really smart β€” and we get bored FAST)
  • It can be stuffed with peanut butter (this is non-negotiable)
  • It floats (I like water, okay? Don't judge me.)

πŸ† My Officially Alfie-Approved Toy List

1. Enrichment Chew Toys (a.k.a. The Brain Buster)

Okay, these are my FAVORITES and I will not be accepting criticism. You stuff them with treats or peanut butter, freeze them, and then I get to spend like 45 glorious minutes trying to get every last lick. It keeps me busy, it keeps my mind sharp, and it keeps me from chewing on the couch (my humans are very grateful for this last part).

My top picks in this category:

Look for ones that are:

  • Made from durable, non-toxic rubber
  • Dishwasher safe (my humans appreciate this)
  • Sized for large breeds β€” anything "small" is a joke to me

Alfie Rating: 🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾 / 5 paws. Perfect 10. No notes.

2. Durable Chew Bones (Fillable = Better)

I love a good chew. It's not aggressive, it's THERAPEUTIC. Chewing helps me relax, keeps my teeth clean, and gives me something to do when my humans are busy doing their human things (staring at small glowing rectangles, mostly).

The best ones are fillable β€” you can stuff them with kibble, treats, or wet food and freeze them. Suddenly a simple bone becomes an ADVENTURE.

Pro tip from me, Alfie: Freeze them overnight. It takes longer to get the good stuff out. More licking = more fun. This is science.

Alfie Rating: 🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾 / 5 paws

3. Lick Mats (The Calm-Down Specialist)

Okay this one is sneaky brilliant. A lick mat is a flat textured mat you spread peanut butter, wet food, or yogurt on β€” and I lick it off slowly. The repetitive licking is genuinely calming. I become basically zen. My humans use it during bath time, vet prep, and whenever I'm extra amped up.

Alfie Rating: 🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾 / 5 paws (bias admitted, I find this deeply soothing)

4. Floating Bite Rings (Water Toy Supreme)

I am a water dog. I don't know why. I just am. If there is a pool, a lake, a puddle, or a suspicious wet patch of grass, I will find it and I will be IN it.

A floating bite ring is everything to me on a hot summer day. My pops throws it, I launch myself into the water like a magnificent furry missile, I retrieve it, repeat forever. My humans get tired way before I do. This is because I have infinite energy and they do not.

Great for: pools, lakes, rivers, really big puddles.

Alfie Rating: 🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾 / 5 paws (heavily dependent on how unsupervised I am)

5. Squeaky Plush Toys (With Limitations)

Okay I know I destroyed the duck. But hear me out β€” some plush toys are actually good for gentle play, cuddle time, or just carrying around to show my humans I'm happy (I do this a lot; I'll grab a toy and strut around whenever someone comes home β€” it's my thing).

The KEY is to get ones built for large breeds with reinforced seams. And maybe don't leave me alone with them for more than 20 minutes. I'm working on my impulse control. It's a journey.

6. Agility & Training Sets

OKAY. This is where I shine. I am a German Shepherd. We were BRED for work β€” herding, protection, search and rescue. We are not couch dogs (I mean, I do love the couch, but that's beside the point). Give me something to DO and I will do it PERFECTLY and then look at you like "okay, what's next?"

Agility sets with weave poles, jumps, and tunnels are incredible for:

  • Physical exercise (I burn A LOT of energy this way)
  • Mental stimulation (I have to THINK about what I'm doing)
  • Training bonding time with my humans (this is my favorite part)
  • Looking extremely impressive at the dog park (also important)

Check out our Training Tools collection β€” we have full agility sets that will make your GSD look like an absolute professional.

Alfie Rating: 🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾 / 5 paws

🚫 Toys Alfie Does NOT Recommend

  • Tiny toys. I will swallow them. This is not a threat. It's a warning.
  • Cheap rubber that crumbles. My humans had to do a "toy check" after I left pieces everywhere. Not fun for anyone.
  • Toys with long strings or ropes that can unravel. Again, I am large and I am enthusiastic.
  • That duck. I don't want to talk about the duck anymore.

The Bottom Line (From Me, Alfie)

German Shepherds deserve toys that match their energy, their intelligence, and their magnificent jaw strength. We are not casual dogs. We are SERIOUS about playtime.

All the toys I love live right here β€” browse the full Toys & Enrichment collection and find what's right for your GSD. And if you want to see my personal shortlist, head over to Alfie's Favorites β€” everything there has been tested by me, personally, with my actual mouth.
